Mr. Thapar! You are intelligent. At least you think so. Some of your "Bhakths" think so.The other day,I was talking about Media Columnists with an 80 year old relation. He was highly appreciative of your "straight" talk. But, the purpose of a Devil's Advocate is to twist facts and get what he wants. Your column in this week's Hindustan Times is like Mark Antony's speech. For a casual reader, Mark Antony is a hero who took on the conspirators. But deep beneath his every word, there is more than meets the eye, his own ambition and getting what he wanted! The Kingdom along with two others.

So, when you say that Modi continued to change the system with the schemes of Congress (you quoted some) and then started castigating him for not changing anything on ground you remind me of this famous line of Mark Antony.

I come to bury Caesar,

Not to praise him.

Does not your appreciation of the schemes of Congress sound something like this? vCongress is already buried, but you write only to praise them. Connoisseurs know your real intent.

Dr. Johnson, the first ever lithographer,  was once quoted as saying about patrios.

. Patriotism; Politics; Subversion
"A man sometimes starts up a patriot, only by disseminating discontent, and propagating reports of secret influence, of dangerous counsels, of violated rights, and encroaching usurpation. This practice is no certain note of patriotism. To instigate the populace with rage beyond the provocation, is to suspend publick happiness, if not to destroy it. He is no lover of his country, that unnecessarily disturbs its peace. Few errours and few faults of government, can justify an appeal to the rabble; who ought not to judge of what they cannot understand, and whose opinions are not propagated by reason, but caught by contagion."(sic.)

Patriotism is the last resort of a scoundrel." (sic.)

After Modi took over reins of government, the number of such patriots is only increasing with non issues like ghar vaapsi, love jihad, right wing extremism, church attacks etc,.,doing rounds in Media and your columns.  Do you not think you fall under the same category of patriots that Dr. Johnson loved to call "scoundrels"  who try to instigate crowds against well run elected government that saw no graft at upper levels and saw reducing graft at the lower levels?

Now, let us come to brass tacks.  You wrote "Mr. Modi might not take it as a compliment if you stress that, in critical areas, his success is dependent on the foundation laid and good work done by his predecessor". I hope you read the interview of Sri Modi during the past few days to various news agencies? He clearly said that he had to clear the rubble from scratch like lobbying, snooping, lethargy of bureaucray, corruption in corridors of power, too much concentration of power in PMO,with a lame duck PM, extra constitutional authorities dictating terms to the PM etc. Is it the foundation you are speaking? Then, Mr. Modi dug deeper than you project, kept the design of the great mansion called India intact but relaid the foundation itself.

I am happy realization dawned on you that governance is a continuing journey. A new driver suddenly cannot lay a new track to run the train carrying 1.25 cr. passengers. While continuing to run the train, a good leader involves the whole lot of passengers inviting suggestions for a smoother run than before. Previously, signal was in the hands of Sonia and Co., and the slow driver, MMS, unfortunately was not getting the green signals unless he shared the coal, the power, the air, commissions on the sale of tickets etc., The change that you said came here.

Now, the signalling system is in the hands of people and they give green signal when they feel the driver takes them to their destination safely and securely. They do not expect anything in return except good governance. Majority are ready to change ways and more will follow suit. Nincompoops remain stubborn and laws will deal with them.

Read my blog how it works exactly.

Be it Aadhar, DBTL, FDI in multi brand retail, retrospective taxation (on which you are shouting from rooftops for no reason), MAT,  MGNREG etc, the schemes were not, prima facie, bad. The implementation was. What did the earlier PM do on this? Waiting for green signal from the NAC, whose members had no administrative experience?

Do you recall the 20 point program, IRDP, Bank Nationalisation etc., during the Indira period? Were they not perfect? Where are they now? Died natural death due shoddy implementation and graft from the highest to the lowest levels. What was the fate of Aadhar, DBTL, MGNREG etc., previously. What was the success rate? You do not want to speak. Why did the previous pro-poor government declare 67% of population BPL, when Indira gave a call for "Garibi Hatao" in the 70s? And you, patriotic guys, expect Modi to change the whole rot in a year? What could not be accomplished by the Congress in 40 years, in fact it worsened, you want Modi to accomplish in one year! Come down! Angels! You are not super humans nor Modi is. Please wait for the good days Mr. Thapar! You can not continue to be a perennial dissenter. Sometimes, see what is happening around you.

Your whole purpose is to show Caesar in good light and Brutus as bad.

"When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept: /Ambition should be made of sterner stuff"
He denies that Caesar wanted to make himself king, like Sonia had.

Are you also not living in self denial mode when you talk of Sonia and MMS as Ceasar incarnate and voters who voted them out Brutus!

Come clean Mr Thapar!  After long fought independence struggle, we continued with the British Constitution, British rule of governance, even continued with paying the erstwhile princes ransom from treasury. We used their Railway system, power lines, telephony, their bureaucratic systems etc., Do you say Nehru was wrong? Our constitution makers were wrong? In the process we continued many laws that were outdated, not suited to India but suited to colonial rulers. Now, it took the statesman of the stature of Modi to repeal these laws. Why did you not raise your voice all these days against the outdated laws in the statute book? Are you trying to appease minorities like Congress and their stooges?

Modi is leading the nation in the right path. Do not try to create speed breakers and toll gates like the past 67 years. None is willing to pay toll for work not done. Please realise this.

Or you will retain a permanent place in the Patriot list of Hon. Dr. Johnson!
